Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi Tented Lodge is a secluded, eco-friendly retreat tucked along the tranquil shoreline of Lake Ihema in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park. This intimate lodge offers a harmonious blend of rustic charm and refined comfort, providing an ideal base for travelers seeking an immersive and environmentally conscious safari experience. Operated by African Parks, Ruzizi not only offers visitors a unique connection to nature but also channels all its proceeds back into the conservation and management of the park, making it a truly responsible travel choice.

The lodge features about 9 luxury tents, accommodating a maximum of 20 guests at a time, which ensures privacy, quietude and personalized service. Each tent is thoughtfully constructed under the shade of large fig and palm trees, connected by raised wooden boardwalks that blend seamlessly into the surrounding forest. The tents are furnished with either queen-size or twin beds, a small dressing area, en-suite bathrooms with solar-heated hot water and outdoor showers or bathtubs that allow guests to bathe beneath the open sky. Rustic wooden furniture, woven mats, soft linens and private verandas with hammocks create a warm and welcoming space where guests can relax after a day in the bush.

At the heart of the lodge is a beautiful thatched communal area, where meals are served around a large communal table or on the expansive lakeside deck. Here, guests gather to share stories over drinks or unwind by the firepit, suspended above the water and surrounded by lantern-lit wooden decking. The lodge operates on a full-board basis, with meals lovingly prepared by the local team using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. While there’s no Wi-Fi or television, this digital detox is intentional inviting visitors to truly disconnect and appreciate the sights, sounds and serenity of the African wilderness.

The lodge runs entirely on solar power from water heating systems to lighting, and was constructed using local materials by local craftsmen. Every element, from handmade furniture to energy-efficient systems, reflects a low-impact philosophy. Furthermore, all profits generated by the lodge are reinvested into Akagera National Park’s operations supporting wildlife protection, community development, anti-poaching efforts and habitat restoration. This model allows travelers to directly support Rwanda’s conservation journey simply by staying at Ruzizi.

Guests at Ruzizi Tented Lodge have easy access to a wide range of wildlife experiences, with Akagera National Park being the only Big Five Park in Rwanda. Daytime game drives through the park’s scenic terrain rolling grasslands, acacia woodlands, lakes and swamps offer chances to spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, rhinos and leopards. For a different perspective, boat safaris on Lake Ihema depart right from the lodge’s jetty, giving guests up-close encounters with hippos, crocodiles and a wealth of birdlife including fish eagles and kingfishers.

In terms of access, Ruzizi is approximately 2.5 hours by road from Kigali, making it one of the most accessible yet remote-feeling safari lodges in Rwanda. Its location within the park means guests are right at the edge of the wild from the moment they arrive.

Ruzizi Tented Lodge is not just a place to stay but also an experience grounded in conservation, community and connection to nature. With its low-impact design, personalized hospitality and access to Rwanda’s remarkable wildlife, it offers a safari experience that is both memorable and meaningful. Perfect for couples, solo travelers or small groups who value tranquility, authenticity and sustainability, Ruzizi is a quiet gem in the heart of one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories.
