Gishwati-Mukura National Park located in the western part of Rwanda along the Albertine Rift, is the country’s newest national park and one of its most important ecological restoration projects. Officially designated in 2015, the park spans approximately 34 square kilometers and consists of two separate forest reserves: Gishwati Forest in the north and Mukura Forest in the south. These remnants of the once-vast Congo-Nile rainforest corridor are now being reconnected and rehabilitated to form a continuous, biodiverse forest ecosystem. Despite its small size, Gishwati-Mukura is rich in biodiversity, especially given its position within one of Africa’s most critical conservation zones: the Albertine Rift, known for its high levels of endemism and ecological importance.

Historically, Gishwati and Mukura forests were severely degraded due to decades of deforestation, agricultural expansion, livestock grazing and human resettlement particularly after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, when returning refugees cleared forest land for survival. These pressures fragmented the forests, drastically reducing wildlife populations and leading to soil erosion and climate vulnerabilities. However, in recent years, Rwanda has prioritized the restoration of this area as part of its broader environmental sustainability agenda. Through partnerships with conservation organizations like the Rwanda Environment Management Authority and international NGOs, Gishwati-Mukura is undergoing a major ecological recovery that includes tree planting, anti-poaching measures and community engagement.

The park is home to a surprising variety of wildlife despite its relatively small size. One of its most notable residents is the eastern chimpanzee, which shares the forest with other primate species such as the golden monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey and the blue monkey. These primates are indicators of a recovering ecosystem and have become symbols of the park’s conservation success. In addition to mammals, Gishwati-Mukura boasts over 230 bird species including several Albertine Rift endemics like the Ruwenzori batis and the dusky crimson wing. The park also contains diverse flora with over 60 tree species including indigenous hardwoods and bamboo, all contributing to the ecological richness of the forest.

Gishwati-Mukura is not just a conservation project but also a model for sustainable development and community-based conservation. Local communities play a central role in the park’s protection through eco-tourism ventures, environmental education and agroforestry programs that promote sustainable land use outside park boundaries. Initiatives such as planting buffer zones, supporting beekeeping and promoting ecotourism lodges have helped reduce human pressure on the forest while improving livelihoods. The park’s management plan emphasizes coexistence ensuring that conservation goes hand-in-hand with social and economic benefits for neighboring populations.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park is part of a broader vision to reconnect Rwanda’s remaining forest corridors including links to Nyungwe National Park to the south. The government in collaboration with conservation partners, aims to restore this forest corridor, which will allow wildlife movement and genetic exchange between populations critical for long-term ecological resilience. In 2020, the park was included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, recognizing its global ecological value and Rwanda’s commitment to integrated conservation and development.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park stands as a powerful testament to Rwanda’s forward-looking approach to conservation. From a heavily degraded and forgotten forest to a protected national park with reemerging wildlife and community-driven management, it embodies the possibility of restoration even in the face of significant environmental damage. As both a natural sanctuary and a human-centered conservation project, Gishwati-Mukura is paving the way for a greener, more resilient future in Rwanda.
