A 5-Day Rwanda Primate Tour offers an immersive and unforgettable journey through one of Africa’s most biologically diverse and scenic countries. Your adventure begins with your arrival in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and vibrant capital city. After being greeted at the airport by a local guide, you are transferred to your hotel for check-in and some rest. Depending on your arrival time, a short city tour may be scheduled. This includes a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a powerful and moving site that honors the victims of the 1994 genocide and provides historical context. The tour may also include stops at local craft markets or art galleries giving you a taste of Rwanda’s resilient culture and emerging urban creativity. The evening concludes with a welcome dinner, where the group can go over the itinerary and prepare for the exciting days ahead.
On the 2nd day after having breakfast, the journey heads northwest towards Volcanoes National Park, located in the Virunga Mountains. The drive which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, offers breathtaking views of Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills” lush green landscapes, terraced farms and distant volcanic peaks. Upon arrival in Musanze town, you will check into your lodge nestled in the foothills of the volcanoes. The afternoon can be spent exploring the local village or relaxing at the lodge. Some itineraries include a visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village where visitors experience traditional Rwandan music, dance and storytelling, providing a deeper understanding of the country’s heritage.
The 3rd day is the highlight of the tour and an experience many consider life-changing. After an early breakfast, you will head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing by park rangers on gorilla trekking rules and etiquette. You are then assigned to a specific gorilla family and begin your trek through the dense rainforest. The trek can last between 1 to 5 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. Once found, visitors are allowed to spend one magical hour in the presence of these gentle giants, observing their behavior, social interactions and even playful juveniles. The experience is both emotional and awe-inspiring. After the trek, you return to your lodge for lunch and rest. The evening is free to reflect on the experience or enjoy a leisurely walk around the area.
On fourth day, you embark on another early morning adventure, golden monkey trekking also within Volcanoes National Park. These endangered primates are endemic to the Virunga region and are known for their vibrant golden-orange fur and lively personalities. The trek is generally easier than gorilla trekking and offers great photo opportunities. After spending an hour with the monkeys, you return to the lodge to freshen up and check out. You then begin your journey back to Kigali, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. Depending on your pace and interests, there may be time for another short visit to local markets or cafés before dinner.
Depending on the chosen itinerary, the fifth day could include an optional extension to Nyungwe Forest National Park or it might be a departure day from Kigali. If Nyungwe is included, visitors wake early for a trek in the ancient rainforest, home to over 13 species of primates including large groups of chimpanzees. The trek through the misty forest is atmospheric and rich in biodiversity. You will hear the shrieks and calls of chimpanzees before you see them swinging from trees and foraging on the forest floor. After the trek, you return to Kigali or head directly to the airport for your departure hence concluding the tour.
