05 Day Rwanda Wildlife Gorilla
Your journey begins with your arrival at Kigali International Airport where you will be met by your professional safari driver-guide. After a short briefing, you will embark on a city tour of Kigali, widely considered one of Africa’s cleanest and safest capitals. Key stops may include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which offers a deeply moving and educational insight into Rwanda’s past as well as local craft markets and art galleries.
In the afternoon, set off on a 2 to 3-hour drive eastward to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savanna park, bordering Tanzania. As you approach the park, the landscape changes dramatically from rolling hills to open grasslands, woodlands and acacia forests. Check into your lodge inside or near the park, enjoy dinner and relax to the sounds of nature in preparation for your wildlife adventure the next day.
This following day is devoted to exploring Akagera National Park, which has undergone an impressive transformation in recent years with reintroduced lions, rhinos and robust populations of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes. Wake up early for a full-day game drive across the northern and central circuits of the park. With a packed breakfast or lunch provided by your lodge, you will maximize your chances of seeing predators like lions and leopards as well as large herbivores grazing in the open plains.
Bird lovers will also be thrilled since Akagera boasts over 500 species including the rare shoebill stork and the majestic African fish eagle. Your guide will share insights into the park’s ecosystem and conservation efforts spearheaded by African Parks.
Return to your lodge in the late afternoon and relax as you watch the sun set over Lake Ihema or one of the park’s many picturesque viewpoints.
On the 3rd day after breakfast, take a morning boat safari on Lake Ihema, the second-largest lake in Rwanda. This offers a different perspective of Akagera’s wildlife especially hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds. The tranquility of the lake contrasted with the drama of animals along the shores makes this a highlight for many visitors.
After your boat cruise, depart Akagera and begin the scenic drive northwest to Volcanoes National Park. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours passing through Kigali for lunch or a quick refreshment. Along the way, enjoy views of Rwanda’s famed “Land of a Thousand Hills” terraced farmland, rural villages and misty mountains.
Arrive in Musanze, the gateway town to the park in the late afternoon or early evening. Check in at your lodge, nestled at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes and relax ahead of your unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.
The 4th day is the highlight of your trip, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early breakfast, head to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing on the rules and etiquette of gorilla trekking. You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families, with trekking groups limited to eight people to ensure a respectful and low-impact experience.
The trek can last from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family’s location. The terrain can be steep and muddy but the reward is unparalleled: standing a few meters from a group of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, watching them interact, play and go about their daily lives. You will spend one magical hour in their presence, a deeply emotional and awe-inspiring experience.
After the experience, return to your lodge for lunch and some well-deserved rest. If you still have energy, consider an optional visit to the Dian Fossey Tomb & Research Center or the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village where you can engage with Rwandan traditions and local storytelling and later in the evening return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
On your final day, enjoy a lighter but equally rewarding golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park. These rare and playful primates, endemic to the Virunga region, live in the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes. The trek is generally shorter and easier than gorilla trekking, making it a perfect complement to your primate experience.
After your trek, return to the lodge for a quick freshen-up and lunch before beginning your drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight time, you may stop at the Kimironko Market for last-minute souvenirs or a local coffee shop to reflect on your journey.
Your guide will then drop you at the Kigali International Airport in time for your international departure, marking the end of a remarkable 5-day journey through Rwanda’s wildlife and primate wonders.
