04 Day Rwanda Gorilla – 2 Treks

Double gorilla trekking in Rwanda provides a unique opportunity to observe differences in behavior and group dynamics between two different gorilla families.

04 Day Rwanda Gorilla Safari featuring 2 Gorilla Treks in Volcanoes National Park, designed for travelers looking to fully immerse themselves in the world of mountain gorillas while experiencing Rwanda’s breathtaking natural beauty and cultural richness.

Your adventure begins upon arrival at Kigali International Airport where you will be warmly welcomed by your driver-guide. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a brief city tour of Kigali, visiting landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a sobering yet powerful tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide. This experience offers essential context into Rwanda’s past and its remarkable journey of reconciliation and recovery.

Following the city tour, enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to Volcanoes National Park in the northwestern part of Rwanda. The journey winds through beautiful countryside dotted with terraced hillsides, vibrant markets and rural villages. Upon arrival in the town of Musanze, check into your lodge nestled at the foot of the Virunga Mountains. Settle in, enjoy dinner and rest in preparation for your first gorilla trek the next day.

The second day after an early breakfast, head to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing from the Rwanda Development Board guides. Here, you will be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and preferences. Each group includes a maximum of 8 trekkers, ensuring an intimate experience.

The gorilla trek may take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the location of the family you’re tracking. Hikes can be challenging but are deeply rewarding. You will traverse dense forests, bamboo thickets and steep volcanic terrain with the help of experienced guides and optional porters. Once you find the gorilla family, you will be allowed one magical hour to observe them in their natural habitat feeding, grooming, playing and caring for their young.

After this life-changing experience, return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. Depending on your energy levels, you may opt for optional activities such as visiting the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village where you can engage with the traditions of the Rwandan people through dance, drumming and storytelling.

On the 3rd day after having breakfast, you will go for a second gorilla trek. Your second trek offers a unique opportunity to visit a different gorilla family and gain new insights into the social structures and behaviors of these gentle giants. After breakfast, return to the park headquarters for another briefing and begin your second expedition into the Virunga forests. Today, you will trek a different gorilla family with different behaviors.

The terrain may be different from your first trek, offering a fresh perspective on the biodiversity of the region. Seeing the gorillas again reinforces just how special and varied each encounter can be. The individual personalities of the silverbacks, playful juveniles and nurturing mothers provide a new lens through which to appreciate their family dynamics.

After the trek, return to the lodge, take the afternoon to relax and reflect on your treks. Enjoy a campfire dinner while sharing stories with fellow travelers under the starry African sky with the Virunga Volcanoes forming a majestic backdrop.

On the last day of your trip, have breakfast, check out from your lodge and drive back to Kigali. If time permits before your flight, enjoy a local lunch or explore Kigali’s craft markets for unique souvenirs such as woven baskets, traditional art and jewelry.

Your guide will then transfer you to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of an unforgettable Rwandan adventure filled with close encounters with one of the world’s most iconic and endangered species (the mountain gorilla).
